Procrastination is something that we all suffer from, especially me. But today, how can technology help us avoid postponing.
First, your tasks needs to be organized and prioritized. If a tasks is to big you need to split it into smaller, easier goals.
To avoid getting late on your dead lines, you need motivation, money can be good motivator : StickK for example, “enables users to make commitment contracts in order to reach their personal goals” source : Wikipedia
If you miss your dead line your money will be donate to charity.
When it come to writing something, WriteOrDie allows you to set a punishment if you don’t reach your goal in time or in number of words…
Or if you prefer rewards (and kittens), there is this Written ? Kittens !
Finally, the best tool to get things done is a ToDo list. Of course you can use Post-Its but Any.Do is a wonderful mobile app that does exactly that: ordering and prioritizing tasks. One of the killer feature is the ability to plan your day: every morning (if you set it that way) Any.Do will ask you to organize the ToDos you added, if you commit to that every morning you can get rewards (as Kiip coupons). Of course the app won’t prevent you to schedule every tasks to “tomorrow”.
Finally, when you have succeeded to start doing something you need to stay focused. And Internet can provide so much distraction. How to stay off 9GAG, Reddit, Tumblr, Imgur, Facebook, Twitter, Google+, and be productive ?
Well first, you can use blocking tools like LeechBlock (Firefox extension), StopDistractions, Temptation Blocker, but what will prevent you from un-installing them.
If you work on a computer you can use tools that offers full screen mode, and that will hide distraction like notifications: For example text editor like WhiteRoom or DarkRoom do exactly that.
Getting things done is great but sometime you need to let out some steam, relax, take a break. There are some Chrome extension that allows you to control the amount of time you spend on the fun part of Internet :
- Productivity Owl: will close the tab after a certain amount of time.
- Strict Workflow allows you to have 5 minute break every 25 minutes of hard work, repeatedly.
Finally, it has been proved that ambient noise, indistinct chatter, can help being more focused and productive. Coffitivity is a looping track of sounds recorded in a coffee house or restaurant. According to them : “the mix of calm and commotion in an environment like a coffee house is proven to be just what you need to get those creative juices flowing.”
And it’s working for me !
There is also WhiteNoise, a Chrome Extension that covers ambient noise with white noise, allowing you to feel isolated and focused.
My personal recipe to beat procrastination is Any.Do with Coffitivity for concentration. But sometime my lack of will power is stronger, and “Tomorrow is often the busiest day of the week”.
